Issue Position

Transportation is vital to support our communities and economies, and is a unique challenge in Alaska. Our state is a region of dramatic landscapes and abundant natural resources, but with limited infrastructure and large geographical distances. These factors make developing our region a top priority for Southeast and a central focus of my work in the Legislature.

The Legislature has advanced projects to begin moving our region in the right direction. These include funding for the Alaska Class Ferry and a new joint state-federal moorage facility in Ketchikan. The Legislature is also expanding our region's road network through the Kake-Petersburg Road, Juneau Access, and the Shelter Cove road in Ketchikan.

Developing infrastructure in Southeast Alaska is a challenge, but also an opportunity and necessary step in growing our economy. Whether it's new ferries and airports for getting Alaskans and visitors to and from their communities; ports and harbors to improve fisheries, shipping, and tourism; or "Roads to Resources" for access to our timber and mineral resources, I will continue to work to secure funding for needed transportation projects and improvements that meet these challenges and help realize Southeast Alaska's potential for economic growth.
